Weight of steel per cubic meter is technically termed as the density of reinforcement steel. It is the most important attribute of steel over which calculations regarding its unit weight, specific gravity & other properties rely on. Numerical weight of steel per cubic meter is 7850 kg/cubic meter. But here the question is how this value comes out.

Method for calculation of Density of steel.

To calculate the weight of steel per cubic meter density by water displacement (ASTM C693) can be used. This method works on the Archimedean principle.

  • In this method Take a clean steel specimen and determine its weight by using a weighing balance in the air.
  • Take a jar with known volume calibration & fill it completely with water
  • Use the same clean steel specimen and submerged it in the filled water jar as a result water displaces out of the jar.
  • While steel is in the water jar, measure the weight of steel again in submerged condition. Remember to deduct the weight of string/suspension wire used for hanging the steel with the weighing balance.
  • Now take the steel specimen out of the water jar and place it. Check out the remaining volume of water in the jar to calculate the displaced volume of water by steel.
  • The volume of steel is calculated by subtracting the total volume of the water jar before submerging the steel & the final volume of water after submerging & taking out the steel specimen from the jar. The resultant value is the volume of steel.
  • Now divide the weight of steel calculated using weighing balance by the resultant volume. This comes out to be the weight of steel per cubic meter as 7850 kg/m3.

This method allows determining the density of materials with uneven surfaces, irregular shapes. To get accurate results caution must be observed while doing the test. If possible, place the specimen in vacuum chambers while submerged in the liquid.
